Dividing Perennials

Plant Propagation by Division

Given that our home did not have many plants once we moved in, we have not had to do too much plant division. I have had an opportunity to practice with the few that were already growing on the property when we arrived.

Hostas are plentiful in many home gardens, and our house is no exception. Hostas are one of the easiest perennials to divide often only requiring a sharp spade and lots of watering post-transplant. In some cases, I have divided hostas three times! A wonderfully adaptable shade plant.

In dividing other perennials, like irises, there is a little more careful technique to ensure success. In my zone, the best time to divide the iris is August. I removed the entire clump with a shovel and a garden fork, careful not to damage the rhizomes. I have found that using two garden forks is the most efficiently way to divide this large clumping plant. And, the best part of dividing any perennial, sharing part of it with a friend to enjoy in their garden.
